Atomic Heart draws clear inspirations from a variety of FPS games, though its similarities to the Wolfenstein series are just as prominent as its similarities to BioShock even if the way they manifest differs. The game has been compared by many to the classic BioShock series of dystopian sci-fi shooters, which has given reviewers a basis for their criticisms. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the game.Atomic Heart, the debut game from developer Mundfish, has seen reviews that range from glowingly positive to heavily critical. During the course of the game, players can obtain and drink bottles of vodka, resulting in screen-blurring effects, impaired movements/aiming. The game depicts instances of nudity (e.g., topless/partially nude female figures, with pasties covering nipples). Some cutscenes depict close-up views of severed heads or headless corpses one sequence depicts a soldier dramatically cut in half by a laser. A handful of intense sequences depict players being attacked by an enemy (e.g., players repeatedly stabbed, with blood effects). Fighting is often fast-paced, highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and large blood-splatter effects. Players use machine guns, shotguns, axes, and special skills (e.g., bursts of ice, electricity) to kill various enemies (e.g., androids, mutated human enemies). Players battle robots and mutant creatures while trying to uncover conspiracies. This is an action-adventure role-playing game set in an alternate version of the Soviet Union in 1955.
